An historic church, which has been a commanding presence on Portland’s High Street for nearly 100 years, has been put up for sale or lease.
Malone Commercial Brokers listed the Williston-Immanuel United Church, at 156 High St. for $2.45 million, or $77.45 a square foot — “with or without the sanctuary.” The property is assessed at $5.9 million.
The 31,632-square-foot stone chapel and sanctuary sit on just under a half-acre lot with 105 feet of street frontage. The property has 12 parking spaces.
The campus includes offices, abundant event and community spaces, a kitchen, and is in the B3 business zone, which the brokers note lends the property to a variety of potential uses including residential conversion, event venue or offices.
“A standout feature of the building is its beautiful stained-glass windows, crafted by renowned Boston artist Charles Connick,” said broker Nick Malone. “Connick is considered one of America’s most influential stained-glass artists, with work found in churches, universities and public buildings across the country.”
