Since its beginning four decades ago, Woodard & Curran has built a distinguished record of helping clients solve environmental engineering challenges while achieving operational, financial, and organizational success.
The firm’s founders, Frank Woodard, Ph.D., P.E., and Al Curran, P.E., met at the University of Maine in Orono. Together, they set out in 1979 to grapple with requirements of the federal Clean Water Act, then still new legislation.
Frank and Al charted a mission which continues to guide our firm today. Among that mission’s pledges: “To act in a character of good faith and fairness, and at all times, hold protection of the environment in a regard superior to that of all other interests.”
Over the past four decades, we have expanded our team, our resources, and the depth and breadth of our expertise. Now with over 1,000 employees in nearly 30 offices in 14 states, Woodard & Curran is the largest engineering firm based in Maine and among the top 75 on Engineering News-Record’s lists of Top Environmental Firms and Top Design Firms. Our clients span the country and all sectors of the economy, ranging from local governments to international manufacturing companies.
The firm’s services are integrated to meet the unique needs of each client, and draw on a diverse range of engineering expertise:
- Water services, focusing on funding and financial strategies, drinking water supply and treatment, reuse, stormwater management, wastewater treatment, and instrumentation & controls
- Environmental services, focusing on remediation, clean air, ecological services, health & safety, hydrogeology, site investigation, risk assessment, emerging contaminants, community development, industrial utilities, and industrial manufacturing
Woodard & Curran also brings deep experience in operations and management. We have solved staffing, compliance, and operational challenges through full-contract operations at more than 50 municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment plants, public works departments, and private groundwater treatment systems across the country.
When cost certainty, schedule, and accountability are critical, we offer clients the services of a dedicated team of design-build specialists, Woodard & Curran Constructors. These experts work hand-in-hand with our engineers to embed all factors of a project – from design to constructability to operations and maintenance – into its short- and long-term value.
At the same time, Woodard & Curran works to return value to the natural environment and the communities, regions, and planet we all share. The Woodard & Curran Foundation, formed by our employees in 2010 as a 501(c)3 organization, provides grants and other support to nonprofit organizations committed to environmental education and solving problems related to water, food, climate, and energy. In addition to more than a dozen Giving While Living Grants that are awarded to nonprofits nominated by our employees each year, our Impact Grants provide organizations with $100,000 over three years to support projects that promote a clean and sustainable environment.
