Zachau to-do list: Commercial, health care, housing and educational facilities

Zachau Construction of Freeport has a range of projects underway for a range of industries.

It is building health care sites, educational facilities, multi-unit housing and office space.

For starters, Zachau is managing construction of a Gorham site for Maine Optometry at 25 Main St. (the corner of Route 25 and Route 237). Dirigo Architectural Engineering, Turner, handled design. Ground was broken in November 2018 and doors are expected to open this August. Zachau also oversaw construction of Maine Optometry’s Freeport offices, which opened in August 2018.

Maine Optometry, which for now houses its Gorham practice at 347 Main St., will occupy 4,000 square feet of the 12,000-square-foot building. Malone is handing the leasing for the other space.

Matthew Cyr of Zachau offered details on other projects underway:

  • Hancock Lumber’s administrative offices in Casco will be wrapping up in April. Designer on the project was Scott Simons Architects.
  • Bath Riverwalk Condominiums will wrap up in July.
  • A conversion of Bowdoin College’s historic Boody-Johnson House from 1850 mansion to a dorm. Should be ready this July for next year’s students.
  • Northfield Green, a housing project in Portland, will be finished in March.
  • For Westbrook Housing, the Riverview Terrace and Larrabee Woods complexes are nearing completion.

This spring, Zachau will break ground on the Ecology School in Saco, a new site for Hospice of Southern Maine and Avesta Housing’s Deering Place Project.

post-and-beam contractor builds himself a bigger workshop

Maine Post & Beam LLC is building a post-and-beam barn structure in North Yarmouth, not far from its current quarters. “I am moving my shop and office to that location on Route 9 and North Road. Shop is under construction now and office will be a small post-and-beam structure to start soon,” owner Brett Hellstedt reports. “I live just up the road, so I’m excited to move my operations to a spot on my kids’ bus route.” The company has built a range of projects, from a home in Stonington to a Japanese-influenced dining pavilion Downeast to an octagonal house in North Berwick — all in post and beam.

Construction roundup

Cianbro, Pittsfield, and joint-venture partner Northland Associates recently added an elevated parking garage to its ongoing project in Alexandria Bay, N.Y. The overall project is valued at $215 million and will modernize the U.S. land port of entry from Canada.

Sheridan Construction, Portland, was cited by one of its vendors, Kansas City-based Butler Manufacturing, for reaching the $90 million sales level. Recent projects included a site for Hytek Inc. in Gray and J.B. Brown/Saunders in Westbrook.
