Portland City Council Monday night voted to require a 750-foot buffer between large performance hall venues, which, unless the decision is challenged, means the proposed Live Nation Portland Music Hall cannot be built in close proximity to Merrill Auditorium.
“Frances Perkins’ work continues to shape our lives today, and it’s essential that we tell her story in ways that resonate with modern audiences," said the center’s director.
The exhibitions are a collaboration between the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Colby College Museum of Art and the Brandywine Museum of Art in Pennsylvania.
The Hill Arts center at the top of Portland’s Munjoy Hill has raised $11 million towards the $18 million budget to build a 400-seat performance hall on the former site of the St. Lawrence Church. But an additional $7 million is still needed, or the project can't proceed.
The four-property purchase gives the museum control of nearly an entire city block in Portland’s Arts District, strengthening its long-term plans for growth and improved visitor access.
A proposal to require an enhanced buffer zone between large entertainment venues found no support Tuesday night from the Portland Planning Board. City Council will make the final decision.
