Southern Maine travelers will see an improved Downeaster train schedule come fall, which will provide new morning and evening rush hour trains.

Across the United States, AAA expects domestic travel over the holiday period to be 9% higher than last year.

There were delays and cancellations at Portland International Airport and Bangor International Airport. Other disruptions across the state were spotty.

The automated controls aim to prevent train-to-train collisions, derailments and other hazards, and will be installed on more than 100 miles of track between Brunswick and Haverhill, Mass.

Maine's railroads are running again, but their future hinges on the success of many factors outside the narrow limits of the tracks.

A project to make track improvements between Brunswick and the Massachusetts border is estimated to cost a total of $34.3 million.

The Downeaster train between Brunswick, Portland and Boston is one of 10 possible routes that may get more fuel-efficient Airo rail cars, although they won't make their U.S. debut until 2026.

Ticket revenue was the highest in the service’s 21-year history. Riders include business travelers, tourists, families and students, bicycles and pets.
