Orono Lofts will be a three-story, 40,000-square-foot building at 74 Mill St. The building was originally constructed in the 1800s as a church before being converted for Byers Manufacturing.

Awards from the preservation nonprofit gave praise to adaptive reuse, contextual new construction, storytelling, placemaking and preservation through policy, trades and stewardship.

The 50-year-old establishment has undergone a top-to-bottom renovation and is reopening this month under new ownership and a new name.

The planned 400-seat venue would be located at the top of Munjoy Hill and would include a multi-functional 'promenade' room for exhibits, performances and events.

The general contractor was Penobscot General Contractors in Falmouth. The design came from Archetype Architects in Portland.

Developers Collaborative has been repurposing the former site of the Sisters of Mercy convent and McAuley School for Girls on Stevens Avenue in Portland into a new 55-plus community with a mix of housing options, a bustling community center and a new theater.

PM Construction, of Saco, has two new projects underway.

The units will be sold at market rates and the revenue generated by the project will be put into workforce housing development.

The Longfellow Hotel, developed by Portland-based Uncommon Hospitality, will open for business on May 17.

The historic rehabilitation involved two buildings dating to the 1880s, built within yards of each other, but nearly vacant in recent years.
