While service will be suspended in early March due to extensive pilot shortages, airport officials are hopeful that United will be able to bring back the Dulles flight in 2023.
Gas prices and a dismal weather forecast don't appear to be dampening enthusiasm for Independence Day holiday travel, after it slowed to a crawl last year because of the pandemic.
Elite Airways, which is headquartered in Portland, is adding service to the suburban New York City area this summer. The new flights come as carriers flock back to Maine, for the summer and possibly beyond.
At Maine's two largest airports, carriers continue to increase the frequency of flights and add new destinations in anticipation of the summer travel season.
Bangor, Hancock County, Portland and Presque Isle airports will receive the bulk of the funding, to keep workers employed, for operating expenses and for debt service. The past year saw a 66% slump in demand compared with 2019.
"We are once again pleased that our airline partners continue to put resources into our market," said Paul Bradbury, the airport director at the Portland International Jetport.
