An attempt to unionize by some employees of the Lewiston college has ratcheted up with an allegation that Bates has threatened workers for mounting the organizing campaign.

The union, the Bates Educators & Staff Organization, would be affiliated with the Maine Service Employees Association. Organizers say unionizing is an effort to improve working conditions and compensation and expand diversity efforts.  

The challenge gift, to be matched dollar-for-dollar by others, represents one of the largest scholarship-focused donations ever to a Maine college, according to Bates.

A $75 million modernization project is underway at the Lewiston liberal arts school's science facilities. The new showcase building is intended to extend science from the lab and into the limelight.

Half of the total amount awarded to more than 25 Maine colleges and universities from the American Rescue Plan will go directly to students who are facing hunger, homelessness and other hardship.
