The state has consistently scored near the top in national evaluations of hospital quality and safety, conducted by the Leapfrog Group. Now the group is singling out Maine for its high marks.
Aging facilities, growing numbers of patients, and the demands of new technology and care practices are all forcing Maine's health care systems to make big investments in their buildings and infrastructure.
The gift is a lead donation toward the planned $19.3 million hospital overhaul. Sussman, who has a home on nearby Deer Isle, has made previous donations in support of the 25-bed critical access facility.
The prestigious Top Hospital Awards from The Leapfrog Group honored only 19 rural hospitals nationwide. With five recipients, Maine's showing is far better than last year, when one hospital in the state was recognized.
