The bright orange trucks of Heatable, an oil delivery company based in South Berwick, may stand out a little. But the company, which began service in the Portland area Wednesday, is also unusual for another reason.

Maine education and business leaders on Tuesday called for beefing up career and technical education, as well as secondary and post-secondary programs, to fight a looming skills gap in the state's workforce.

Gov. Janet Mills has nominated Guy Langevin, chief administrative officer of Dead River Co., to serve as chairman of the State Workforce Investment Board, which advises the governor on workforce policy and development.
