The Worthington-JAX Biomedical Fellows Scholarship aims to offer innovative, experiential biomedical research training opportunities for current Worthington Scholars and alumni.
Jackson Lab plans to renovate an existing 3,500-square-foot facility on the Bar Harbor campus, expand capacity and meet growing market demand for advanced research mice.
The collaboration integrates JAX’s expertise in genetics, disease biology and stem cell research with GSK’s in neurodegeneration and drug discovery. The goal is to help close a gap between scientific discovery and the development of new medicines.
The deal “marks a turning point for biomedical research,” combining genetics expertise with automation technologies, which could accelerate therapies for diseases like cancer.
“JAX and most other research institutions will be at best much smaller than they are today, and some won’t exist. You can’t recover from that,” said the head of Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor.
