Recent legislative action will have some positive impact on the housing shortage, but advocates stress there is more work to be done to reach the state’s goal of creating 84,000 more homes by 2030.

The program is designed to boost affordable rental housing development. It provides up to $10 million annually, with a maximum possible allocation of $15 million in any one year, including carried-forward credits.

Westbrook Development Corporation is partnering with the city of Biddeford to build a 40-unit affordable housing complex — the first phase of the nonprofit’s broader housing development plan for Biddeford.

“Maine cannot afford to lose existing affordable homes faster than we can build new housing,” said Genesis’s executive director.

“This building is literally a cornerstone to the town’s continued efforts to revitalize, restore and rejuvenate our housing stock and help grow our economy,” said Rumford’s town manager

In the simplest of terms, "affordable" when referring to housing is not a vague adjective. It refers to homes, either for rent or for purchase, priced exclusively for households whose income does not exceed certain levels.
