The exchange, which functions as an auction house for landings of southern Maine groundfish, has already had to turn to the Portland Fish Authority for financial help.
A request for funding from the city of Portland has led to a request-for-interest from organizations that might privatize the exchange, which serves as an auction house for local groundfish catches.
The Portland Fish Pier and the Portland Fish Exchange are under scrutiny, and tenants and other users are providing feedback on issues such as hours of operation, mix of harvesters represented, and interaction with the public.
The Portland Fish Exchange's longtime general manager, Bert Jongerden, will retire at the end of the year. He established new sources of revenue and oversaw the transition, in 2008, to an internet-based platform, replacing the traditional "outcry" auction used from the beginning.
