The lot that used to house the former Children’s Museum is being temporarily repurposed as an outdoor events and performance space — until construction of the new 60,000-square-foot wing gets underway.
The four properties, now owned by MaineHealth, will enable the museum to add much-needed parking and free up more of the museum building for gallery space.
Starting next week, dozens of art banners will be installed along downtown Congress Street inspired by works from the Portland Museum of Art's permanent collection.
The use of engineered wood products is gaining traction with architects, engineers and builders who value its structural stability, light environmental footprint and natural beauty.
The museum is planning to take down the building and replace it with a temporary park until the new building can be built, but Greater Portland Landmarks is asking for a delay until all plans and fundraising are finalized.
