The modernization project will ad capacity and fault tolerance to power and water infrastructure that supports the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's mission to overhaul, repair and modernize the Navy’s nuclear-powered submarines.

“When a crew submerges beneath the surface, facing the crushing pressure of the ocean, there is absolutely zero margin for error,” said the yard’s commander.

UMaine students will be able to work with shipyard experts on real-world science, technology, engineering and mathematics projects. The shipyard will benefit from collaborations with faculty while recruiting potential employees.

Maine lawmakers are joining New Hampshire officials in opposing a proposed rule that could undermine recruitment, retention and naval readiness.

A team from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard spent much of 2025 coordinating with the base. At the project’s peak, more than 400 shipyard personnel were deployed to Connecticut.

The event marked the first time an additive manufactured copper nickel flange has been welded at a public shipyard and one of its first applications for in-service submarine use.

The complex modernization project involves thousands of moving parts and months-long preparation.

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard project distinguished Cheyenne as the first submarine to undergo an overhaul as part of a program that extended its total service life beyond 44 years.

The Manufacturers Association of Maine and the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership are teaming up on the month-long campaign with events across the state.

Most of the civilian workforce hails from Maine, with 4,252 employees earning $433.2 million, up from 4,194 employees earning $402.1 million in 2023.
