Unity will debut its applied bachelor's degrees in sustainable business management, psychology and human services, culinary innovation and food systems, entrepreneurship and environmental crime investigation. 

Unity Environmental University said astrophysicist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson will give the keynote address in the school's May ceremony at Merrill Auditorium in Portland.

The sustainability principles balance community and economic vitality with environmental conservation and the notion that tourism should be responsible and create a net positive effect on the destination.

The relocation of Unity Environmental University means the school's original campus, in its namesake town, is now officially on the market.

The new name, Unity Environmental University, better reflects an evolution from a small, private liberal arts college to a master’s college and university, the school says.

Unity College, which is now headquartered at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, has embraced "distance education," with 4,472 of its 4,638 students taking custom-designed online courses. About 170 students are enrolled in hybrid learning, with 60 students living on campus.

The institute aims to provide access and affordability for students looking to up-skill, retrain or find new jobs in environmental fields.

The initiative comes at a time when many students no longer want to spend the time and money it takes to complete a baccalaureate program but seek career training.
