Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle offers a one-year certificate program for licensed practical nurses, while York County Community College offers a two-year associate degree for registered nurses.

Business owners throughout Maine have said they have jobs available but have difficulty finding qualified and trained workers.

“Employers like BIW need to have a seat at the table with our educational partners to ensure the training provided to Mainers prepares them for the jobs of today and tomorrow,” said Bath Iron Works' president, Charles Krugh.

The policy change covers Maine’s seven community colleges and about 25,000 students.

Workers are needed in electrical positions to support the state’s aggressive renewable energy goals. Electricians are essential for key tasks, such as connecting solar panels to the electrical grid.

Tuition for the 2021-22 academic year remains at $96 a credit hour for Maine residents, or $288 for a standard three-credit hour course, the Maine Community College System announced on Friday.

“We are eager for the students, faculty and staff to return to our colleges as much as possible,” Maine Community College System President David Daigler said.

Michael Fischer, the first in his family to attend college and currently an associate vice president at a school in New Hampshire, will succeed Barbara Finkelstein, who retired in June.

In a new WalletHub ranking of the country's best community college systems, Maine comes in at No. 21.
