Developers Collaborative has broken ground on another 55-plus condominium building for the Stevens Square at Baxter Woods community, located off Stevens Avenue in Portland’s Deering Center.

Portland Mayor Mark Dion called on members of the business community to pitch in, while developer Kevin Bunker pushed back against bureaucracy.

A joint project between Developers Collaborative and ProsperityME has received final approvals from the Portland Planning Board and secured funding to go ahead with the development of a 50-unit affordable housing complex at 1125 Brighton Ave.

The demand for 55-plus housing and assisted living facilities has grown along with housing costs and Maine's aging population.

Developers Collaborative will oversee the project, at 1125 Brighton Ave., while the nonprofit ProsperityME will be the owner.

The proposal from Developers Collaborative in conjunction with ProsperityME recommends building up to 100 units, primarily for families.
