The deal “marks a turning point for biomedical research,” combining genetics expertise with automation technologies, which could accelerate therapies for diseases like cancer.
“JAX and most other research institutions will be at best much smaller than they are today, and some won’t exist. You can’t recover from that,” said the head of Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor.
The Jackson Lab’s $8 million will help build a facility dedicated to rare disease research. MDI Bio Lab’s $1.6 million will support regenerative medicine research.
The center is viewed as a critical recruitment and retention tool. At full capacity, it will increase the number of licensed child care spots on Mount Desert Island by over 30%.
There’s no clear solution to solving childcare facility shortages nationally, but “we can make progress locally,” said one lab staffer and mother of three.
