The lot that used to house the former Children’s Museum is being temporarily repurposed as an outdoor events and performance space — until construction of the new 60,000-square-foot wing gets underway.

Demolition crews are in place at 142 Free St., site of what is expected to be a $100 million expansion project at the Portland Museum of Art.

The museum is planning to take down the building and replace it with a temporary park until the new building can be built, but Greater Portland Landmarks is asking for a delay until all plans and fundraising are finalized.
