Liz Cotter Schlax will step down as president and CEO of United Way of Southern Maine in January 2025.

Global credit rating agency A.M. Best upgraded its outlook for the Portland workers' comp insurer from negative to stable, and affirmed the company's other ratings of excellent.

The final round came down to Jessica Estes, president of the Boulos Co., who was playing for Learning Works, and Jacqueline Edmondson, president of the University of Southern Maine, who was playing for the USM Scholarship Fund.

On X, LinkedIn and Facebook, users posted messages and several variations of a map of Maine with a heart in place of Lewiston using hashtags such as #LewistonStrong and #MaineStrong to get the word out. Some included broken hearts.

Checks will go out to 14,000 Maine policyholders starting in mid-November from the Portland-based workers' compensation insurance company.

Like many professional service industries, the insurance industry has been undergoing expansions and transitions in recent years, with acquisitions, C-suite transitions and new hires.
