Maine's tourism industry is a major driver of the state's economy, with visitors drawn to the coast, mountains, lakes and seasonal destinations.
According to the Maine Office of Tourism, the state typically sees more than 15 million annual visitors, who generate more than $9 billion in spending. Tourism supports 116,000 jobs at hotels and inns, retail operations and at companies that specialize in outdoor recreation.
At the same time, this year travelers face higher costs for gasoline, airfare, hotel rates and short term rentals, all of which may influence vacation plans.
As we head toward Memorial Day, anticipation builds for the upcoming tourism season.
