Gov. Janet Mills vetoed a measure that would have put an 18-month moratorium on data centers. While Mills said there are legitimate concerns about data centers’ impact on the environment and electricity rates, she backs a proposal for a redevelopment of the Jay mill site that would include a data center.
Data centers are large facilities that house servers and computing systems for cloud storage and internet services. They are rapidly expanding in rural areas across the U.S., particularly in states like Virginia, Texas and Georgia.
