The deal to acquire a construction and demolition disposal site and wastewater treatment facility is a milestone for the development of a “hub and spoke” model for waste services.
Development of the former mill, which had an industrial explosion in 2020 and closed last year, will focus on businesses looking to be near forest resources. About 1 million square feet of industrial space will be available.
Pixelle had announced in September 2022 that the mill would close in April, citing economic forces that made operations unsustainable. About 230 employees will be affected by the closure.
The mill has endured significant business and financial challenges, compounded by the 2020 rupture of one of its pulp digesters and catastrophic damage.
The grants go to all 16 counties and represent a broad cross-section of projects, such as protecting historic downtowns from rising sea levels, addressing public health risks from rising temperatures, and installing electric vehicle chargers and solar power arrays.
