Jackson Lab built a child care center on its Bar Harbor campus and began operations in early 2024 with Down East Family YMCA as the operator.

Over the past four years, capital projects added $29.2 million in cumulative value to the regional economy and supported more than 300 construction-related jobs.

Highlights include 100% of the campus energy coming from Maine renewables and 99% of food waste diverted from the landfill.

The deal “marks a turning point for biomedical research,” combining genetics expertise with automation technologies, which could accelerate therapies for diseases like cancer.

The timing of the shutdown comes during the fall foliage season, which is among Acadia’s busiest periods and a major driver of the regional economy.

“Since LifeFlight started providing services to Bar Harbor, we have depended on seasonal temporary landing zones,” said Bar Harbor’s fire chief. The new, year-round landing pad shortens turnaround times.

The contribution — the largest from an individual in the hospital’s history — will accelerate the hospital's campus upgrade.

The donations will help fund improvements to the hospital’s main campus in Bar Harbor, including an expanded emergency department, main entrance and ambulance bay.

“JAX and most other research institutions will be at best much smaller than they are today, and some won’t exist. You can’t recover from that,” said the head of Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor.
