With MTI support, Brooklin Boat Yard will build a 7,520-square-foot service and technology facility. The new building will allow the company to take on additional new build, restoration and service projects and to hire 10 additional employees.
The plan is to create a maritime research center at the local library to house Jon Wilson and Benjamin Mendlowitz’s extensive collections: “a hidden goldmine,” said the campaign chair.
The two new owners of the Brooklin General Store see growth potential in the shop and kitchen. “We are building on what’s already here,” said one, who called the store “an absolute institution.”
The goal is to cultivate new audiences through digital avenues, such as an online education series based on WoodenBoat School classes, and a membership website.
WoodenBoat is one of Maine's most prominent magazines. The enterprise also includes a school, a boat show and retail operations. The buyers will continue operations through a lease at the longtime Brooklin campus.
Eric Stockinger comes from leadership positions in education, boatbuilding and retail management. His goals include boosting female enrollment and recruiting the next generation of instructors for the school, over 40 years old.
