Island Workforce Housing is following up the success of its first 10-unit project in Deer Isle with a 12-unit modular development in Stonington, due to be completed this spring.

Without affordable housing that match income levels Deer Isle and Stonington risk ongoing labor shortages, declining school enrollment and a shrinking year-round population and tax base.

While much of the state's affordable housing efforts are focused on urban areas, McDonald will lead a nonprofit focused on year-round rural communities on Deer Isle.

The nearly turnkey opportunity came with a large dock system, including a dining dock that seats 72. A 1031 exchange made the purchase possible.

Commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous industries in the U.S. The Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries will train 250 high school students, particularly in areas near commercial lobstering zones.

The nonprofit works on challenges related to the fisheries, climate change, gentrification and ecosystem-based management.

Island Approaches is the parent for Maine Camp Outfitters, Maine Promotional and a retail store operating in Stonington. The outfitting company supplies about 40 summer camps.

The company was founded 31 years ago. The transition is expected to sustainably benefit a new generation of workers.

Maine has some 5,000 miles of coastline, but just 20 miles of it is designated working waterfront. A Deer Isle town plans to highlight its role.

The inn includes small historic buildings on the fishing village’s narrow Main Street. The buyers envision extending the seasonal model to year-round rentals.
