Dove Tail Bats, of Shirley, teamed up with Newfangled Solutions, of Livermore Falls, on a new remote scanner for baseball bats.

The grants, announced by the Maine Connectivity Authority, represent the single largest investment in Maine's broadband infrastructure to date.

Reigning champion Pete Alonso, of the New York Mets, will aim to defend his title in the annual power-hitter slugfest with a bat made by Dove Tail Bat Co., a 15-employee manufacturer in Piscataquis County.

Made in the Piscataquis County village of Shirley Mills, Dove Tail Bats have been used by Major League Baseball stars including last year's NL Rookie of the Year, Pete Alonso. Now a licensing deal may accelerate the company's growth with a new type of bat.
