Over the past couple of years, Eastport has seen targeted growth in the cruise ship market.

The Eastport stop was part of the ship’s maiden voyage from New York City to Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was Virgin Voyages’ first visit to Maine.

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden is lending his support to legislation aimed at preventing federal Customs and Border Protection from forcing local ports, including Eastport, to shoulder additional costs and responsibilities.

The acquisition positions the buyer to preserve the business legacy while modernizing operations for the future, including system updates and enhanced customer experience.

Demand for cruise visits to Portland, Rockland and Eastport is strong, but the outlook varies. Factors include sailing times from other cruise ports, certain customs and border protection restrictions and, in Rockland’s case, a local ordinance limiting the cruise season,
