In a two-page letter to the U.S. International Trade Commission, a dozen lawmakers are urging officials to examine trade conditions affecting the U.S. potato industry

The head of the Manufacturers Association of Maine, speaking at a Mainebiz forum earlier this week, suggested targeting future workers as early as fourth grade.

Rob Tod, founder of Allagash Brewing, said that tariffs will cost the Portland-based business more than $300,000 this year.

The delegation builds on previous trips to learn how scallops are grown, harvested, processed, marketed and made into various products in Japan, toward diversifying Maine’s coastal economy.

The competitive grant program is designed to help businesses fund a single capital purchase — such as equipment, technology or facility upgrades — that will help drive expansion, increase production or enhance market reach.

The deal allows Elmet to expand its portfolio of materials that can be used to produce components for NASA and other high-performance applications.
