Bangor Hydro owner plans power line
Emera Inc., the Nova Scotia-based owner of Bangor Hydro-Electric Co., said this morning it plans to build a transmission line to deliver electricity from northern Maine and Canada to southern New England.
The project would cost about $2 billion, Gerry Chasse, Bangor-Hydro's manager for the project, told Mainebiz this morning. Construction could start in 2010 and last for 5 years, he said. The first part of multi-phase project would deliver about 660 megawatts of electricity from Atlantic Canada and northern Maine to Massachusetts.
Emera is studying the feasibility of the Northeast Energy Link transmission line with National Grid, a New York-based power supplier, and Spectra Energy in Houston, Texas, according to a press release from Emera.
