EMMC expansion a go

Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor yesterday said it received state approval to proceed with a $250 million expansion to its inpatient facilities.

The expansion includes added capacity for critical care and cardiac patients, modern surgical suites, consolidated and enhanced Heart Center space and a new women and infants floor. The hospital says it operates at or near capacity every day. The Department of Health and Human Service's approval of the hospital's Certificate of Need was issued with a number of conditions, which the hospital will consider over the next several weeks to determine if its plans need to be adjusted.

The hospital expects to break ground on the project in late 2009 and for construction to continue for the following three years.

DHHS in May initially recommended rejecting EMMC's Certificate of Need because of worries the hospital didn't have enough capital for the expansion.
