Two Midcoast boatbuilders are planning a joint venture that could produce as many as 100 boats a year for an unnamed customer.
Union River Boats in Bucksport and Lyman Morse Boatbuilding Co. in Thomaston are planning to split a $1.25 million investment to launch the project sometime next year, according to the Bangor Daily News. The two companies will build 48-foot sailboats for an unnamed customer, with Union River building the fiberglass hulls and other components, and Lyman Morse performing the assembly and installing the interiors and power systems. Belle Ryder, operations manager at Union River, told the paper that collaborating with Lyman Morse was necessary for the company to tackle a project of that size. The two companies have collaborated on previous projects as well.
In related news, Lyman Morse also recently said it has begun developing a solar-powered generator, according to VillageSoup. The Power Cube, a waterproof fiberglass box can generate up to 600 watts of power, was designed for disaster management or emergency relief. The company is currently testing the product, which will range in price from $27,000 to $37,000.
