Ski resort owner challenges commissioners

The owner of a ski resort in Greenville has challenged county officials to take over running the facility following criticism of his management.

James Confalone told the Bangor Daily News he would lease the Big Squaw Mountain Resort to the Piscataquis County commissioners for $1 a year for 30 years, but only if they signed a lease within 60 days. "If [the commissioners] think they can do such a great job, better than me, then pony up to the bar," he said.

County commissioners earlier in the week held a public hearing to discuss ceasing snow removal on the county-owned access road to the resort on what the state now calls Big Moose Mountain, arguing the resort has not been consistently kept open to the public. The county did opt to continue plowing the road to keep the ski area open for youth programs, but Confalone said commissioners' comments during the meeting damaged his business's reputation.

County Commissioner Eric Ward told the paper he hadn't heard of Confalone's offer. When asked if he would submit the proposal in writing to the county, Confalone said he would not. However, County Manager Marilyn Tourtelotte said the county may seek legal advice on whether it could enter into such an agreement, if the ski resort is operational and needs no money for improvements.
