UMS head Pattenaude resigns to teach
University of Maine System Chancellor Richard Pattenaude will retire from the post next year and take a teaching job, he announced yesterday.
Pattenaude will step down as chancellor next June when his contract expires, and will then teach one class while on sabbatical from July to December 2012, according to the Bangor Daily News. In December 2012, he plans to return to teaching full time. Pattenaude, 65, has served as chancellor since 2007, and previously was president of the University of Southern Maine for 16 years. "After 20 years as a leader in the system, both as a president and now as chancellor, it seems like a good time - professionally and personally - to step aside," he said in a statement. While chancellor and president of USM, Pattenaude continued to teach an Introduction to American Government class each fall.
Pattenaude oversaw the system's development of its New Challenges, New Directions plan, which outlines goals and initiatives for the system in the face of a more than $40 million expected revenue shortfall over the next four years. The system has also grown its academic offerings and online courses, all while undertaking major cost reduction efforts. The UMS Board of Trustees is expected to take action on Pattenaude's resignation Sunday at its regular meeting, according to the paper.
