BIW wins $680M destroyer contract
The U.S. Navy is awarding Bath Iron Works a $680 million contract to build the next ship in the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke destroyer class.
BIW's parent company, General Dynamics, was selected over Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., to build the destroyer, known as DDG 115, according to press releases from all four members of Maine's congressional delegation. The shipyard also won a $665 million option for a second Arleigh Burke destroyer, pending appropriations and authorization from Congress. The Arleigh Burke class has been BIW's mainstay, but the program was initially slated to end, with the DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class destroyer replacing it. BIW is currently building the first DDG 1000 destroyer, and earlier this month received a $2 billion contract for the next two. BIW is scheduled to deliver the last of the three DDG 1000 ships in February 2018.
On Friday, BIW laid off 44 salaried workers in its engineering department as design work for the DDG 1000 destroyer class winds down.
