State's first fireworks store opens

The state’s first retail fireworks store opened yesterday in Manchester, taking advantage of a change in state law that legalizes the sale of consumer fireworks.

Pyro City owner Steve Marson estimated about 250 people came out in a snowstorm on opening day, and he said sales were steady, according to the Kennebec Journal. Marson has a warehouse in Farmingdale for the store and his other business, Central Maine Pyrotechnics, which puts on major fireworks shows for municipalities and other groups. The new store has five employees, and he also has six licensed pyrotechnicians for his other business who were on hand Thursday to explain to consumers how to use their purchases.

Marson said he plans to open three other stores in Edgecomb, Winslow and Presque Isle before July.
