Burned sub needs $400M in repairs

It will likely cost upwards of $400 million to repair a submarine docked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery that was damaged by a fire late last month. Officials are still determining, however, if the sub can be repaired at all.

The U.S. Navy issued the preliminary estimate yesterday, but said they are still examining the USS Miami to determine if the nuclear submarine can be salvaged, according to the Portland Press Herald. The hull may have sustained too much damage to withstand ocean pressures. USS Miami was docked at the shipyard for repairs when a fire broke out May 23. Seven firefighters and crew members were injured, but none seriously. The cause has not yet been determined.

Members of Maine's congressional delegation said they were hopeful the Navy would fund the work and that it would happen in Kittery.
