$100K to help Maine Military Authority workers

A federal grant of $100,485 will help about 75 workers laid off from Maine Military Authority in Limestone. The National Emergency Grant will continue to fund re-employment and training services, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The additional money supplements an initial grant of $463,083 awarded to the Maine Department of Labor in May 2011. The company, which refurbishes military vehicles, in March 2011 laid off 150 people, or half its work force, because of a dearth of federal contracts. An additional contract in May 2011, however, kept the company from laying off another 50 people.

"This additional funding will enable these workers to continue to receive services that equip them with the necessary skills to re-enter the work force," said U.S. DOL Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Jane Oates.
