Casella proposes $4M recycling plant in Lewiston
Vermont-based Casella Waste Systems Inc. has submitted plans to build a $4 million recycling facility at the Lewiston landfill on River Road.
According to the Sun Journal, Casella's proposed 15,000-square-foot facility would take unsorted recyclables from around Maine and mechanically sort them for sale on the commodities market. If the company's proposal is accepted by the city, it would sign a 30-year lease to take over Lewiston's recycling transfer station and would build an additional automated sorting facility there.
The newspaper reported that Casella would pay the city to lease the land as well as property taxes, employ 25 people at the new facility and process up to 25,000 tons of recycling per year. Lewiston's City Council will continue its discussion of the proposal on Aug. 14.
In related news, Casella recently signed a purchase-and-sales agreement to sell its Maine Energy Recovery Co. facility in Biddeford, which has agreed to pay the solid waste management company $6.65 million over 20 years, enter into a new 10-year waste-handling agreement and a new 10-year recycling collection agreement, according to a company press release. The city and MERC have been negotiating the transfer of the facility for months.
