UNE lands $10M research grant
The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $10 million research grant to the University of New England to study the neurobiology of chronic pain.
The five-year award will be used to establish the UNE Center of Biomedical Research Excellence for the Study of Pain and Sensory Function. The Biddeford-based university expects that its research will facilitate the discovery and development of new therapies. Ian Meng, co-director of UNE's Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, said the funding "will help drive innovative research that increases our understanding of pain as a progressive disease, while also connecting us with strategic partners who can translate these findings into new treatments for patients suffering from chronic pain."
UNE's COBRE comprises a core group of neuroscientists, pharmacologists and chemists at the university who are focused on understanding the neurobiology of pain. The grant will enable UNE to increase the number of neuroscience investigators and will also be used to renovate laboratory space, purchase core behavioral, imaging and histology equipment, and fund key support personnel.
