With over 40,000 in attendance for last weekend's Great State of Maine Air Show in Brunswick, organizers said the event's $800,000 cost has been covered.
The air show featuring the Air Force's precision flying team, the Thunderbirds, was the second held at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station since the base's official closure. Steve Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, which is charged with redeveloping the base for civilian use, told the Associated Press that the goal of the event is now to continue a tradition started by the Navy and not to make money for the redevelopment effort.
Last year, the air show brought just 25,000 attendees after the weekend schedule was interrupted by Hurricane Irene.
A third air show is already on tap for next year during the weekend of Sept. 14-15, 2013, bringing back the Navy's precision flying team, the Blue Angels, to the Brunswick Executive Airport.
