BIW gets $26M design contract for Zumwalt

Bath Iron Works was awarded a $26 million design contract from the Navy for work on a new DDG-1000, or Zumwalt, class of destroyers.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced the contract award in a press release Thursday stating that the design work will be scheduled between now and March for the Zumwalt class ships.

In September of last year, the company laid off 44 salaried employees in its engineering department as design work for that ship decreased.

The first three of the Navy's Zumwalt class destroyers will be built in Bath with the first ship in that class scheduled for completion in 2015. In early September 2011, the company received a $2 billion contract for the second and third ships in the new class.

In June, the Bath defense contractor was awarded a $66 million contract for maintenance and modernization work on the Navy's previous Arleigh Burke class of destroyers. This time last year, BIW received a $680 million contract for an Arleigh Burke class ship and in February of this year won a $663 million contract to build another.
