LePage video sets energy outlook

Gov. Paul LePage set his goals for Maine's energy policy, which focus on lowering costs for ratepayers, in a YouTube video published Monday.

In the video, LePage takes issue with the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard, which requires electricity providers to generate a certain portion of their power with renewable sources. In the video, LePage contends compliance with the Renewable Portfolio Standard wastes money.

The governor specifically wants to eliminate the 100 megawatt cap on hydropower contributions to the portfolio standard, saying the state is capable of producing more hydropower electricity and could become an intermediary for selling it from Quebec to other New England states.

He also identified biomass, wood pellets, heat pumps and natural gas as energy sources that do not require subsidies, which he said could help reduce the cost of power. The governor remained critical, however, of wind-generated power.
