First Wind revises Bowers Mountain plan

Six months after rescinding a 27-turbine wind farm application for Bowers Mountain, wind power developer First Wind has come back to the state with a new proposal.

According to a press release, First Wind's project company, Champlain Wind LLC, has crafted a new proposal that calls for 16 turbines instead of 27 at the eastern Maine project, located in Carroll Plantation, near Lincoln.

First Wind told The Associated Press that it plans to reconfigure the turbines to reduce the $100 million project's visual impact and use new technology to leave lights off at night except when planes are in the area, changes that aim to address concerns about the project expressed by the state's Land Use Regulation Commission in October 2011.

The company press release states that 112 of the town's 144 residents have recently signed a petition supporting the project that it says could provide enough power for 25,000 homes.
