A Lewiston roofing contractor is facing $243,000 in fines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for alleged violations.
Lessard Brothers Construction and its predecessor, Lessard Roofing & Siding Inc., had been cited 10 times for inadequate safety precautions before OSHA inspectors in January found four workers exposed to falls of 23 feet at a work site in Lewiston, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Labor. Because of Lessard's extensive history of violations, the agency imposed $224,000 in fines on the contractor, with an additional nearly $20,000 for improper training and electrical safety and hard hat protection violations.
Company owner Stephen Lessard told The Associated Press his company has not willfully violated any rules. The company has 15 days to comply with or contest the findings. The DOL release reports Lessard Brothers has been without workers' compensation insurance since October 2010.
