Yacht-maker Hinckley Co. has launched the first in a new series of luxury boats that the company says will keep 90 people employed this year.
The Southwest Harbor-based company yesterday launched the first Talaria 48, a $2.2 million yacht for which the company has 11 more orders, the Bangor Daily News reported. The company expects steady demand for the vessel and hopes to eventually build five or six of these boats a year. The 48-foot yacht is modeled after the original Talaria series, which resemble upscale versions of traditional lobster boats. This summer it also plans to launch the Talaria 34 model.
In 2008 and 2009, Hinckley Co. laid off 90 people from its Trenton production facility before rehiring back 30 to 40. It currently employs 230 people in Maine, and another 200 or so at other East Coast locations. In January 2011, it was sold to Scout Partners LLC, a capital investment firm.
