Portland co. unveils solar-powered charging station for electric cars
Portland-based ReVision Energy has installed what it says is the region's first solar-powered electric vehicle charging station at its workshop on Presumpscot Street. The station is free and open to the public.
The company is hosting a grand opening of its solar electric-vehicle charging station July 26 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 142 Presumpscot St., according to a press release. The event will include electric-vehicle test drives and demonstrations, and a demonstration of how to use the charging station. Local electric-vehicle dealers will provide models for test drives. The company touts the station as the first of its kind in the state, but according to The Forecaster, the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor installed a solar station at the end of last year.
According to the company's website, it recently installed 33 photovoltaic panels on two arrays at its Portland facility that will produce more than 10,000 kilowatt-hours a year. The electricity generated will power the showroom as well as the charging station.
According to ReVision, 50% of Maine's greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation, and the state has the highest per capita CO2 emissions and highest per capital oil consumption in New England.
