The federal Department of Energy will provide up to $4 million to an offshore wind project at the University of Maine.
The grant is expected to fund the engineering, design and permitting phase of the project; commercial operation is expected by 2017.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced the award Wednesday, which allows the project to compete for one of three later awards of up to $47 million to site, construct and install an offshore wind turbine.
An industry study by the Norwegian company Statoil projected that the commercial offshore wind industry in Maine could generate more than 800 jobs and add $43 million annually to the state's economy.
The UMaine-led team, called New England Aqua Ventus I, was one of just seven award recipients from a pool of nearly 70 grant applicants.
The team is made up of a variety of public and private organizations, including the universities of Maine and Massachusetts, energy company and wind developer Iberdrola, composites manufacturer Ershings Inc., Cianbro and Bath Iron Works, among others.
