Developer Doug Sanford announced plans to turn a former mill building in downtown Biddeford into the city's only hotel.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the $4 million project would redevelop 6,000 square feet of space in Building 20 of the Pepperell Mill Campus to include a 40-room boutique hotel with a restaurant on the first floor.
City planners are taking their first look at the conceptual project on Wednesday. Construction could begin as early as 2014 if approval is secured in the coming weeks.
The city's economic development director, Daniel Stevenson, told the paper that the hotel development could boost more growth in the city's mill district, which includes the Maine Energy Recovery Co. trash incinerator that was shut down at the end of 2012.
The proposed hotel is on the opposite side of the mill district from the incinerator, which the city agreed to buy from Casella Waste Systems in mid-2012 for $6.6 million. City officials are now targeting redevelopment efforts in the area.
